Approximately one month ago, our brothers and sisters in West Java were hit by an earthquake, leaving them homeless and in need of materials for basic survival. Most of those who have lost their homes are still occupying the emergency tents. Schools are not yet operational or completely rebuilt. Children and adults still are living in fear of the next quakes. Currently, our organization, PULIH, is still working on relief efforts in Pengalengan, a small town outside of Bandung.
Unfortunately, more quakes hit our home country last week. Powerful consecutive quakes hit the western part of Sumatra, on the 30th of September 2009 and the 1st of October 2009. The latest update on October 3rd, 2009, from the Ministry of Health in Indonesia stated that approximately 3000 people are still trapped under the rubbles. Padang, a larger town on the western part of the island of Sumatra, was typically easy to access is now destroyed badly. Those who survived the quakes are now without clean water, electricity, and other basic needs. The coastal city of Pariaman, which is located near to the epicenter of the quake, is almost completely destroyed. From our sources at the site, approximately 80% of the villages around Pariaman are now rubbles. One of the villages is the hometown of one of our organization’s members, Loly Nur Fitria. Through Loly’s assistance, PULIH has begun to support the village by providing first-aids and baby foods.
Indonesia, sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the countries that are prone to earthquakes. Even with the awareness and improved emergency preparedness, at times we are still struggling to react quickly to the impacts of the quakes. With the past experiences, network, and resources, PULIH has been able to work hard and effectively at the ground level. During this emergency period, in addition to accepting monetary donations, we are also collecting donations of emergency supplies such as first-aid kits, used clothing, basic needs for women and children. These donations will go directly to the villages around the city of Pariaman.
After that, our next step will be the coordination with our network of friends and psychosocial support systems, and collaboration with the Ministry of Health for the next steps of relief efforts. Further assessment for additional needs will be done collaboratively with our network of partner organizations and our resources at different sites.
Furthermore, we will be working with DART Center to provide the latest information on various events . The updates are also available at www.dartcenter.org
On our website, we will be posting psychoeducation training materials related to psychosocial support systems that can be useful at the site locations in crisis.
